Moksha has the unique
distinction of winning two National awards (for Best Cinematography and
Best Audiography) even before its release. The Arjun Rampal-Manisha
Koirala starrer is the directorial debut of cinematographer Ashok Mehta,
who has shown his professional brilliance in films like 36 Chowringee
Lane, Bandit Queen, Mandi, Ram Lakhan and Gupt.
But the film has been in the
making for some time. If all goes well, the film should hit the screen
across the country in the last week of October 2001. Moksha is about an
idealistic young man Vikram Saigal (Arjum Rampal) training to become a
lawyer. The brilliant student completes his law course with flying
colours but is totally disillusioned with the lack of ethics in the field
of law. Opting to fight a lone battle instead of being part of the
corruption rampant in his profession, Vikram dreams of setting up an
institution based on ideals and honesty.
But, unexpected circumstances
force him to don the lawyer's robe and fight a case? ironically, in
defence of himself. Throughout the struggle, he has only one person to
depend on - the love of his life, Ritika Saigal (Manisha Koirala).
Director Ashok Mehta calls Moksha a love-story with a difference. "For
the greater good of humanity sometimes people have to resort to lesser
evil. That is the theme of my film," he says.
Apart from the lead pair, the film has Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal,
Gulshan Grover, Farida Jalal and Danny in its cast. Rajesh Roshan has
provided the music. The film has been produced by Ashok Mehta himself and
Neeraj Mehta.
