Cornershop
Spring Tour 2001

A Review by Ajay Pamneja.

This powerful issue based drama was on national tour with many successful performances to rave reviews in Scotland and most of England.

We at Asiangigs wish them every success and another tour - soon on an even bigger scale.

Read some of the reviews: "The Cornershop is full of real humour based on real experiences. It's like seeing your own life on stage. Its a rollercoaster ride."

Three new writers with differing cultural backgrounds and experiences look behind the counter, beyond the shelves of stock, mundane and exotic ... where people are torn by social pressures, economic demands and, especially, family expectations.

Everyone is touched by the traditional shop, although they don't know about the dramas that go on inside.

Many Asian families don't want their children to spend their lives behind the counter, but Ravi Mangat writes about Satnam, a young Asian man who wants to continue the family tradition. Yasmin sets her play in a Pakistani fabric shop, while Ashok Patel portrays a run-down newsagent's / grocer's, using this to explore pertinent issues.
