Cinema is a strong medium in India
.  Some of the actors and actresses are treated like and revered as Gods in that country.  No wonder somebody thought of using that influence to educate the misguided about the futility of hatred towards other communities.  In response to the communal violence in Gujarat, Rohena Gera, decided to do something.

Not all that glitters is Bollywood!

Not all the 'Asian' content films in the UK cinemas come from Mumbai. There have been many successful 'Asian' films recently, which have been the products of UK or US based Asian talent. Films like Monsoon Wedding, Bend It Like Beckham, East is East, The Warrior and many more. In the same vein, we now have:

Mumbai response here.

Bend It Like Beckham
certainly set a marker in the Asian film making in the west. In the days, when Bollywood is making its mark on the world scene, our own home grown talent is making its presence felt in a big way.

Bollywood film industry has definitely come of age, as proven by excellent offerings like Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, Kasoor, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai and more recently K3G and Devdas. There is still some 'dead wood' films around like Yaadein being offered by established directors. But I can see big changes on the horizon.

Webmaster's one line reviews:

  • Triads, Yardies & Onion Bhajees - Like a Turner Prize entry - very mixed feelings. Apart from Ashvin Joshi & his lady, the rest had some dubious acting talents, script sucks, music - overloaded (drowns the dialogue). Credit to the team for filming style and marketing energy & drive for getting the film where it did. Is not going to leave a mark in the Film Annals, though!
  • Kaash... Aap Hamare Hote - Avoid it if you can. Same old story - new faces, but Sonu fails to make a mark as an actor. Nadira is OK, but has very non-bollywood facial features. Idea & the script lets the film down.
  • Saathiya - A very well presented story and excellent on-screen presence of the lead pair. No fancy sets, or unrealistic love-stories. Tru to life - throughout. Definitely worth watching!
  • Road - Slow and wobbly take off, but the film builds upto something substantial and close to a psychological thriller. It has a good premise, but the execution of the first 45 minutes or so of the film lets it down. Manoj & Vivek are both excellent.
  • Kaante - Not quite The Reservoir Dogs, but a very entertaining film. The characters are all played with so much ease and it appears like the actors are on a day out having lots of fun. Story line is OK, and with it's usual Bollywood trademark of six guys in the open being shot at by about a hundred LA cops with full protection gear and cover and all escape!!! If the Mumbai street language offends you, then do not watch it or take your kids with you.
  • Humraaz - Akshaye Khanna is not so innocent! He gives a wonderful performance in this twisted suspense thriller. An excellent story with so much you would not expect.
  • The Guru - Jimi Mistry is the GURU. Captures the character so well with his mannerisms and a brilliant performance. I enjoyed it thoroughly, especially the fact that there is full-fledged well sung 'catchy' Bollywood song in a fully-fledged Hollywood film.
Jimi Mistry is a Jim Carey in the making?
  • Devdas - Captivating! The performances by the whole cast, sets, colours and photography are all faultless, the classical music feel is haunting. The screenplay loses the thread at times, but still a very likeable film. Does not qualify as the best film of recent times though, as some claim!
  • Company - The one to see! Action, emotions and a good treatment of a sensitive subject.
  • Na Tum Janno Na Hum - Mixed reactions - Youthful and lively.
  • Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage - Avoid if you can - So much like Kaho Naa...(only the storyline, technicality and script leave a lot to be desired.)
  • Chandni Bar - Was released a while ago - A MUST SEE - Excellent film, Jump the queue,if you have to, to make sure you get the video or the DVD.
Slow moving but no other recent film beats it. I rate it at No. 3 after Lagaan & Dil Chahta Hai.
