Nagesh Kukunoor’s latest film ‘3 Deewarein’ has Juhi Chawla making a comeback after a pretty long hibernation from the silver screen. Cast opposite her is macho man Jackie Shroff, versatile Naseerudin Shah and the film’s director Kukunoor himself. 

The film tells the story of an ambitious documentary filmmaker Chandrika (Juhi Chawla) who wants to make a film on three dreaded prisoners – Jaggu (Jackie Shroff), Ishaan (Naseerudin Shah) and Nagya (Nagesh Kukunoor).

Chandrika’s aim is to bring into light the lives of these three contrasting personalities who seem to have just one thing in common – their dream of freedom from captivity.

Obsessed with the idea to make an objective documentary Chandrika begins to build relations with each of the three convicts. 

As she goes about making her film she stumbles upon the true reasons that compelled the three convicts to commit the heinous crimes.

36 China Town

Released May 2006

From master-thriller makers comes this brisk and bouncy rib-tickler that purports to be a comic whodunit. Admittedly, some portions of the narrative keep you smiling and some make you bite your nail in suspense.

This is pleasurable silliness masquerading as a whodunit. To that extent it works, though you never know why the film had to have the title that it has when in fact China Town plays no part in it. Sure, paper dragons float by in the climatic song and we see some mongoloid faces in the chorus line. But er... is that all it takes to create China Town?

Girika (Namrata) is a city girl who is also in love with Sunil and Suman is the girl whom he is eventually forced to marry due to circumstances.

Action film! Corrupt politicians, Good cops, Bad cops!

Good script and excellent action sequences.

Realism meets commercialism. Madhur Bhandarkar takes the same route that his peers Govind Nihalani [ARDH SATYA] and Rajkumar Santoshi [KHAKEE] embarked upon in the past.

Though AAN is different from ARDH SATYA and KHAKEE, there do exist similarities. The tough life a cop leads, the politician-underworld nexus, the clash of ideologies... plots and sub-plots like these have been witnessed time and again.

Yet, what sets AAN apart is the way the makers have packaged the film. Besides clap-trap situations, the film is embellished with some exceptional dramatic confrontations that would appeal to the masses. However, there's no denying that the film could've done with better writing.

The morale at Mumbai Crime Branch is extremely low. All work is happening in a highly discretionary way.

Sr. Inspector Vikram Singh [Shatrughan Sinha] has given up on the system. Inspector Appa Naik [Suniel Shetty], the encounter specialist, is of the opinion that criminals need to be eliminated. Constable Khalid [Paresh Rawal] is a happy-go-lucky guy.

These officers have accepted a laidback attitude as a way of life as they know that no one can beat the system. 

The city is virtually ruled by three people… Manik Rao [Manoj Joshi] -- the Home Minister calls the shots, with the law firmly under his control. Underworld don Yusuf Pathan [Irrfan Khan] has his full support. A business magnate, Gautam Walia [Jackie Shroff], is also hand-in-glove with them.

But everything changes when D.C.P. Hari Om Patnaik [Akshay Kumar] gets transferred from Pune.

The three officers find themselves at loggerheads with the new officer, who is determined to change things. The opportunity arises when Manik Rao gets businessman Ajit Pradhan [Milind Gunaji] eliminated by Yusuf Pathan's younger brother [Rahul Dev].

Pradhan's murder opens a Pandora's box. Hari and his men set off on a trail to nab the people behind this hi-profile murder. AAN may not be the most original script you've witnessed, but it does boast of several engaging moments.

The film takes its own time to come to the point, which explains why the viewer gets restless in the first half. The introduction of each character, especially that of Akshay and Suniel, grabs a lot of footage. However, the introduction of these two actors has been filmed most imaginatively.

The film actually takes off when Milind Gunaji is shot dead by Rahul Dev. And the pace continues to gather momentum during the song [filmed on Reema Sen] and the shootout thereafter.

Post-interval too, the film continues its brisk pace, with several confrontation scenes taking the graph of the film to a new high. The sequence between the three cops [Shatru, Akshay, Suniel] and Irrfan outside the mosque is an apt example of good execution. Ditto for the scene when Akshay shoots Rahul Dev and throws him off the skyscraper. The war of words between Om Puri and Manoj Joshi is also remarkable.

Director Madhur Bhandarkar has targeted the film at the masses and that is evident not only in the dramatic portions, but also when it comes to weaving action in the screenplay. 

On the whole, those who prefer hardcore masala flicks [with loads of action] to feel-good entertainers will like AAN.

DIANA HAYDEN'S FIRST FULL-BLOWN BODY SHOW!

Circa 1997, a girl from India with looks from west makes it big as Miss World. After crowning she devotes two years for social work as per the contract of the beauty pageant, and then she returns to music videos. Pooja Bhatt offers her a lead role and she prefers to decline the opportunity. Later, to make her profile look marvelous she settles in London. Producers forget the face that remains off air for a long and the girl thinks the time is running out. And, then comes the news that Khalid Mohamed, film critic-turned- director has cast Miss World 1997, Diana Hayden, in his film 'Tehzeeb'. People wait for the film to watch and see her beauty. The expectations come crashing, as the film never takes off. 

But hold your breath. Diana Hayden is back with a full blown up role in director Rajesh Singh's new film 'Ab Bas'. And, she is going to cover the entire wait by doing everything to woo her fans. There is a lot of smooching, titillation and skin show in the film. If you are a freak for the films that come as a sex thriller tag line, this is one for you and if you can not wait till the last line, let me tell you Diana can be next contender for the title of a 'sex bomb' currently conferred on Bipasha Basu with a tough competition from Priyanka Chopra, another Miss World. 'Ab Bas' is also an answer to J Lo's 'Enough' and has a lot of resemblance with Rakesh Roshan-directed flick 'Khoon Bhari Maang'. Forget the happy and merry joint family where Bahu was destined to sacrifice her wishes for the sake of sindoor. This one brings you into the 21st century! 

For those who have forgotten director Rajesh Singh, there is a refresher. Before making 'Ab Bas', this man has given films like 'Betaabi', 'Baaghi' and 'Aanch'. 'Ab Bas' is his fourth take on Bollywood and going by the trends of oomph and style, this time he has come with a mixture of thrill and sex. A good combination of both has always proved lethal. In 'Ab Bas', Diana plays Soumya, a model. She is watched by a millionaire in a beauty pageant that she wins eventually, and this millionaire loses his heart to her. The millionaire Karan (Shawar Ali) is also a business tycoon and leaves no stone unturned to woo his girl. He manages to win her heart and soon they get married. 

The life progresses and this newly wed couple is gifted with a baby girl. But the story does not come with 'And They Happily Lived Ever After Tag'. The problems start when Soumya finds out that her husband is flirting with another girl. At first Karan apologizes but his behavior does not change at all. Things soon start taking an ugly turn and before Soumya could do any thing, she is left with a notice threatening either live with it or be prepared for the consequences. But, Soumya won't let her husband walk away so easily. She leaves home with her kid and seeks a divorce. Karan refuses, and gets all set to make his wife's life hell. Soumya bears the pain for some time. Later, she decides on tit for tat, and says, 'Ab Bas (Enough is Enough).' 

'Ab Bas' sails on a story that looks fresh in its concept at least for the current generation. However, regular movie buffs will find many similarities. But the director has tried his best to camouflage these sequences with heavy dosage of sex and sleaze. Notwithstanding with the current trend of titillation where skin show takes over settings of the story, Rajesh Singh manages to put the soul and the beauty together. So, when Diana Hayden tries to showcase her body assets, it comes in disguise of requirement of the plot. What creates hindrance for the film is its designing. The film has been extensively shot overseas, and it is here that the lack of continuity comes in. Rajesh has also tried to put more and more masti and even added a song on Nigar Khan, but that does not serve the purpose as people want more and more. The story does have some interesting twists but there are some turns that could have been easily avoided. A husband flirting outside home will not be so stupid to get caught only by his phone call. Moreover, it fails to score well on technical grounds. The film did need at least one or two hit and catchy songs to create some waves on music channels to garner more and more patronage. Second, the failure of films like 'Kiss Kis ki Kismet' and 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha' has also shown that people are getting fed up with the overdose of sex and body exhibition.

Ab Ke Baras

AB KE BARAS marks the debut of Arya Babbar, son of actor Raj Babbar.

The film is directed by Raj Kanwar, who's associated with successful flicks such as DEEWANA, JEET, JUDAAI, LAADLA, BADAL and HAR DIL JO PYAAR KAREGA.

The film introduces Amrita Rao as the leading lady, while the supporting cast includes Ashutosh Rana, Shakti Kapoor, Ashish Vidyarthi, Vishwajeet Pradhan and Danny Denzongpa.

Vikram Bhatt's thriller movie 'Aitbaar' has been in the news for some time.

The movie is about a father, who has already lost one child in communal riots and becomes possessive, almost obsessive about the safety of his second child. Bipasha Basu and John Abraham come together for the second time in this movie. Superstar Amitabh Bachchan plays the father's role. Bipasha, a college student, falls in love with John Abraham and the father is convinced that Abraham is not a nice guy. Bipasha plays a submissive girl initially, but she becomes more decisive at the end when she has to choose between her lover and her father. The film, which went on the floor last year, got into financial trouble till the Tata group came to its rescue. It will be released in August, it is learnt. 

In the meantime, Bipasha Basu has made it clear that she is not in the race for working with big banners. This unconventional looking actress believes in playing strong characters, and not in playing bubblegum romance. It is to be recalled that Bipasha has quit Boney Kapoor's new movie opposite Anil Kapoor being directed by Darmesh Darshan. The reason is that the film is a rehash of Ashok Kumar- Sunil Dutt starrer 'Gumraah'.

Anaahat

Amol Palekar's latest offering – Anaahat (meaning eternity) is an adaptation of Surendra Verma's play 'Surya ki Antim Kiran se Surya ki Pehli Kiran Tak '. It is a period drama set in 10'th century BC delving into the subject of women's identity, individuality and her sexual desires.

The movie narrates the story of the king of Malla kingdom (Anant Nag) who shares a perfect bonding with his wife (Sonali Bendre) despite the fact that he is impotent. But with his inability to give an heir to his dynasty, the king's council of ministers and religious heads force him to make disturbing decisions. In accordance with the decision, the queen has to follow the traditional custom of niyog – according to which she has to select a mate for one night through which she can conceive a child. The king reluctantly complies with the decision while the queen's consent isn't sought at all. 

But things change after the queen's one nightstand with a stranger (whom the director prefers to keep out of the proceedings). The queen first time experiences pleasures of womanhood through the unasked opportunity conferred to her by the governing bodies. The situation reverses with the one night stand turning out more to be a woman's awareness towards her sexual desires rather than her duty towards the kingdom of providing an heir. 

Amol Palekar doesn't compromises on his screenplay staying away from all sorts of formulaic elements. Moreover he maintains the essence of the film through his choice to go with the Marathi language rather than appease the universal audience. His handling of sequences is commendable esp. in the conversation between the queen and the chief minister before the big night where the queen raises question like “what if she is still unable to conceive even after niyog?” or “what if she gives birth to a girl?” But one just wishes he would have gone in for some more detailing towards the second half instead of opting for a hurried and sort of abrupt end.

Nobility combined with mobility. Interesting gripping combination. "Apaharan", Prakash Jha's harsh and brutal political commentary on the state of anarchy a.k.a Bihar, makes for riveting viewing. 

You know it's true. But you cannot, but shudder at the sheer disintegration of moral values in Jha's brooding and damned world of moral anarchy where characters discuss kidnap victims as "damaged goods" and "intact piece".

What about the viewers' armaans?

The setting is perfect. 'Armaan' (Expectations) are high. People throng to theatres, as there has not been any big film for the last few weeks. To add to this, Honey Irani pens this film. Her ex-husband and equally famous writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar writes dialogues and lyrics. And Amitabh Bachchan reunites with one of his favorite writer Javed after many years. Anil Kapoor joins this team after nearly two decades. Last time he was seen with Amitabh Bachchan in Ramesh Sippy's 'Shakti'. Amitabh plays Anil's father again, but this time a foster one. Honey Irani plays the role of director too.

The success of 'Andaaz' has made a world of difference to Priyanka's career. Priyanka Chopra returned to Mumbai after two months of shooting with Naseeruddin Shah and Arjun Rampal for Rajiv Rai's 'Asambhav'. "Working with Naseeruddin Shah was a dream come true. The way he makes eye contact on camera is amazing. 'Asambhav' is a complete action flick. Two more songs are to be shot in Mumbai and 'Asambhav' is complete. I'm very important to the plot," says Priyanka. She had also signed Sajid Nadiadwala's forthcoming film with Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. This is to recall that the film had originally gone to Kareena Kapoor, but due to some date problems she dropped this project. 

When asked why she said no to the Sanjay Gupta's 'Musafir', the actress said, "I wasn't comfortable with my character's sexual aggression. I think it's a very good story and a great role for any leading lady. But I wouldn't be comfortable with so much nudity and kissing. Sanjay suggested a toning down of the sexual aggression. But I thought any compromise would kill the powerful impact. I have to be within my comfort zone, she added."

Ravi Chopra’s BAGHBAN conveyed the plight of the parents who are desolate and humiliated by their children. His new film BAABUL talks about widow remarriage.

The film’s story goes something like this. Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachhan) and Shobhna Kapoor (Hema Malini) is a middle-aged couple, both rich and happy. Avinash (Salman Khan) is their only kid and very much a ‘laadla’. The father-son duo keep calling each other ‘buddy’ all the time, stating that they are more of friends. Avinash falls in love with Mili (Rani Mukherjee) and they get married. This hurts Mili’s best friend Rajat (John Abraham), a singer, who has feelings for her.

In the mean time Avi and Mili have a son, Ansh. All is going well until one fateful day when Avinash meets with an accident and dies. Mili is devastated. Now Balraj is not able to bear Mili’s sufferings. So he decides to get her remarried and for that he thinks of Rajat who has been Mili’s childhood friend. So he goes to look for Rajat who is now settled in Europe and sings Hindi songs over there.

The bonding between the parent and child to the sad turn of events at the sunset of the parent's life, have been depicted in various films in the past.

B.R. Chopra's BAGHBAN, directed by Ravi Chopra, takes a look at the delicate relationship between parent and child. In terms of story, it comes very close to three films – ZINDAGI [Sanjeev Kumar, Mala Sinha], AVTAAR [Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi] and SWARG [Rajesh Khanna].

Despite similarities, BAGHBAN works, mainly because of the rich emotional appeal it has to offer.

Bardaasht

With the Bobby Deol starrer KISMAT still fresh in the minds of the viewer, you go to watch BARDAASHT with preconceived notions and not many expectations!

E. Niwas' BARDAASHT may not be the most intriguing experience you've had, but you do feel positive at the end of the screening. The film has its share of pluses and minuses, but more than anything else, BARDAASHT drives home the point that Bobby Deol is not merely a star, but an actor as well.

Also, E. Niwas is a competent storyteller.

Aditya Shrivastav [Bobby Deol] is an ex-army officer who was in love with his senior officer's daughter, Payal [Lara Dutta]. He was a brave and promising soldier but was asked to leave the force for not obeying his senior's orders.  His disobedience and subsequent dismissal from army was looked upon so poorly that even Payal had to bid him farewell. He started a travel agency and looked after his younger college-going brother Anuj [Ritesh Deshmukh], coming to terms with his disturbing past. 

Anuj is a mischief-loving daredevil, but one day his deeds cross all acceptable limits. The college principal warns Aditya of his younger brother's delinquency. When Aditya takes this up with Anuj, they have an altercation over the issue, following which Anuj leaves the house in a fit of anger.

When Anuj doesn't return the next day, Aditya tries to trace him through friends and colleagues but to no avail, after which he lodges a police complaint, only to discover that his brother is no more, shot in a police encounter while in possession of drugs.

Shattered, Aditya simply cannot accept his brother could do something like this and decides to uncover the truth behind his brother's death. From here, the story takes a new turn.

In the course of the investigation, Aditya doesn't find the police FIR very convincing. His search for the truth uncovers the series of terrible events that lead to his brother's death.  Aditya decides to take it upon himself to clear up his dead brother's image when the police refuse to do so. He goes to court, taking the help of Payal, who is now a lawyer and old emotions are now slowly rekindled.

However, his adversaries [Rahul Dev, Vishwajeet Pradhan, Ganesh Yadav] will stop at nothing to ensure that the truth remains hidden and Aditya has no option but to take up the gun to prove his brother's innocence.

BARDAASHT is yet another film that exposes the corrupt few in the police force. In this case, the villains [cops] are painted black without beating around the bush.

A number of similar-sounding flicks have been witnessed in the past [the innocent versus the corrupt], but what makes BARDAASHT rise to a watchable level is E. Niwas' deft execution of the subject.

Though the story moves at an indolent pace at most times, there're some riveting and entrancing moments in the film that connect with the viewer instantly. Instances: The sequences in the police station with the cops enjoying a game of cricket and a helpless brother awaiting his sibling's return.

The film gathers momentum when Bobby gets to know that his brother has been shot dead in a police encounter. From thereon, the sequence of events keeps you on the edge. The introduction of Tara Sharma's character at this point provides an interesting twist in the tale.

Though the interval point [Bobby confronting Rahul Dev at a felicitation function] is formulaic, yet the expectations from the post-interval portions are enormous because of the interesting goings-on in the first half.

The post-interval portions do hold your interest, but intermittently. Reason being, the film follows the same path that has been undertaken by films of this genre.

But, of course, the courtroom sequences as also those involving the two prime witnesses - Virendra Saxena and Tara Sharma - again take the film to a new high. The climax is sure to meet with mixed reactions, but there's no denying that it has been ably filmed.

Director E. Niwas' obsession with the police force shows the third time in BARDAASHT [after SHOOL and DUM], though he hasn't got into a too realistic groove this time around. What makes BARDAASHT watchable is the way Niwas unfolds the story - it moves on a singular path from start to end [there's no romantic track or an item song or a comedy track to mar the smooth flow of the narrative!].

Besides, several sequences have been handled with flourish. Scenes such as the one when Bobby goes to the police station to lodge a complaint or the scene in the morgue or even the one when he returns to the police station to lodge the complaint against the cops show his command over the medium.

The flashback - revealed by Tara Sharma - is gruesome, but well handled.

On the whole, BARDAASHT is a well-made entertainer, but it requires more hype and a strong word of mouth to register an impact at the box-office.

Being Cyrus snakes into an intriguing psychological drama, but unravels almost like a quaint comedy. The tale revolves around the rather dysfunctional Sethna family and swings between Panchgani (Katy & Dinshaw Sethna’s home) and an old dilapidated building in Mumbai (where Dinshaw’s aged father, Fardoonjee Sethna, his brother, Farokh, and Farokh’s wife, Tina, live in apparent conflict). Dinshaw Sethna is a dope-smoking retired sculptor, who lives in the secluded hills around a small hill station called
Panchgani. Dinshaw opens his house to a stranger, Cyrus, who gratefully accepts his invitation as well as his wife, Katy Sethna. As Cyrus befriends and enters into the family as Dinshaw’s sculpting apprentice, all the cracks begin to open. The layers unfold and things do not seem quite right. What’s more is that nothing about Cyrus seems quite right either. The six colorful characters play against each other in a bizarre opus of repartee.

Being Cyrus journeys through mind-spaces, though it lends itself as a great new take on classic Film Noir. And although it aims to take the audience on a wild goose chase, we are left in uncertainty for some time about the crimes committed, and the end ties up conclusively apart from the protagonist’s own predicament. The story is narrated by the protagonist, Cyrus, who himself sits at the brink of his dilemma of why life is the way it is.

Being Cyrus is an obsessive, inconclusive, disorderly, and strangely humane story about an outsider struggling to get inside himself. It’s a thought provoking film that will take the audience through
a journey of emotions with alarming twists.

Priya and Raj, two sides of a coin, Different as chalk and cheese. Kareena in a daring role!

Chameli turned out to be the last directorial venture of prolific filmmaker, Anant Balani (Joggers Park, Mumbai Matinee, Patthar Ke Phool, Ek Din 24 Ghante) who unfortunately couldn't complete it due to his untimely demise. Sudhir Mishra (Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi, Dhaaravi, Calcutta Mail) subsequently took hold of the directorial reins of the film. 

Chameli is a contemporary love story between a man who has lost his wife and a professional and much hardened prostitute. A sudden rainstorm brings them together on one pavement, and sparks off a romance unlike any other. 

Aman Kapoor, 32, (Rahul Bose ) has lost his wife and still to be born child on a rainy night in an accident a couple of years ago. The rain brings back memories of that night and haunts his life.

On another rainy night in another part of Mumbai city, Chameli (Kareena Kapoor ), then a young and innocent girl, now a hardened prostitute was lured by her uncle to Mumbai and sold to a brothel. The rain terrifies her.

It is this rain that brings together 2 strangers on one night in the arches of Flora Fountain, South Mumbai. And a relationship blossoms between 2 people who would never have met. A relationship that alters their life forever!

The film is produced under the banner of Pritish Nandy Communications and has some soulful tunes composed by Shandesh Shandhaliya (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Road, Rules). Sunidhi Chauhan sings all the songs in Chameli and surprises displaying the softer side of her voice.

The story revolves around four principal characters. Sunny Deol (Rajveer Singh) is a suspended dare devil cop with aspersions of wiping out crime and winning loads of laurels and medals in the process. His dream goes for a toss when on reinstatement; he is assigned the task of protecting a 10 year old kid, Master Abhishek Sharma (Abbas), from somebody who the police is clueless about. But the cops are sure that Abbas's billionaire parents, killed in a tragic air crash, were victims of a conspiracy and as a result, the kids life is in danger. Little Abbas has only his handful of friends and Manisha Koirala (Sapna) for company, besides of course his servants and business manager, who adore him. Sapna is a professional and successful model. Rajveer loathes his assignment as well as Abbas and Sapna. How they accept each other amidst song and laughter and manage to demolish the scare on Abbas's life, Rahul Dev (Nazir), forms the storyline.

The massive set of Abbas's home was specially constructed for the film at Ramoji Studios, Hyderabad, at a cost of Rs.80 Lakhs.

What a lively and 'pacy' credits to start off a young, fun film by a new young team! First time writer (Roopesh Parekh, 18 years old), first time film director (Harmage Singh Kalirai) and the Production company's (Seven Spice Productions) first feature length film is due to hit the cinemas on 22nd April 2005.

After successful screenings at the Rain Dance film festival in October 2004 and being the inaugural film at the Kino 2005 Manchester International Film Festival, CTM is ready for the big release.

The film shows the very real dilemma facing a young man who is trying to balance familial duty against his own happiness and that of the man he loves. The protagonist Jimi (Chris Bisson), a doctor, comes from a traditional Indian family where parents have sacrificed 'a lot' to ensure their son gets onto a good career path and he loves them back dearly. And he also loves Jack.

The very clever storyline goes through several twists and turns before love wins over. The character of Jack's aunty and Jimi's landlady - Vanessa, has been ably played by Sally Bankes and does not fail to win over the audiences. A sex-crazed, 'booze head' Vanessa will do anything to save Jack & Jimi's relationship, even agree to dress up like a 'Christmas tree' in an Indian wedding outfit and marry Jimi - what a plot!

Bhangra beats, Gujarati wedding, a lap-dance club, a gathering of all the aunties and cousins in the garden marquee make this film into an unusual concoction which never fails to surprise its audience.

India's first 3-D film shot in New York!

Navodaya' CHOTA JADUGAR (3-D) is India's first 3-D movie to be shot in New York. It tells the story of a child, a dog, their friendship and magic.

Indrajith [Suraj Balajee] is an aspiring magician being trained by his magician grand-father Acharya [S.P. Balasubramaniam]. Much to Indrajith's dismay, his father Krishna doesn't approve of his son's passion for magic and takes Indrajith with him to the U.S.

Unable to tolerate the separation from his grand-father, Indrajith flees his home in New York. The rest of the story is all about his attempts to reach his grand-father with the help of a few dogs and a couple of friends in the U.S.

The makers have tried to incorporate everything in the flick to woo youngsters to the theatres – be it magic, visual effects, dog shows and stunts by children.

The best thing about the film is that it encapsulates the combination of little children and animals well. The role of professionally trained dogs from Hollywood is a special attraction in this kiddie fare. The music of the flick is just right with simple lyrics that gel well with the situations.

Directorially, Jose Punnoose impresses a great deal in telling a captivating story. A couple of sequences, especially those between Balasubramaniam and Suraj and also between Suraj and the dogs, portray the remarkable execution ability of the director. Cinematography is perfect.

Suraj Balajee performs exceptionally well and his performance merits an award too. S.P. Balasubramaniam is efficient.

On the whole, CHOTA JADUGAR has the potential to spell magic at the box-office. Timing the film during the holiday period and the 3-D technology will prove beneficial.

Incredibly, the second comedy this week evokes far more laughter amusement and diversion than PHIR HERA PHERI, which meandered in search of mirth.

Mirth is evenly balanced with some keenly insinuated social statement in the prolific Priyadarshan's latest work of wacky witticism. The first half is delightfully liberated of melodrama. The comic communication among Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav and Shahid Kapur (with Om Puri often joining in with the tittering trio) is so steep and yet streamlined, you begin to wonder if this isn't the best interactive laughathon you've seen in a while.

As is characteristic of Priyadarshan's cinema the canvas is glutted with characters who speak non-stop and sometimes provide us with irrelevant information. The screenplay is clogged with characters both comic and serious and sometimes serio-comic. Shahid balances the two facets with admirable equanimity. In his performance he brings both virility and vulnerability. His gentle romance in the large Gujarati business household with the mute beauty Kareena needed more accentuation, less haste and more gentle persuasion.

Priyadarshan uses the spacious Gujarati household teeming with ethnic women running around with plates of sweets, to spotlight the satirical aspect of the plot.

Deewaar - Lets Brings Our Heroes Home

Director: Milan Lutharia, who debuted with Kachche Dhaage has always been partial to the dark-thriller-tunnel, if you excuse Chori-Chori. Once struck by the idea, he took to Gaurang Doshi. It was then developed and nurtured into a screenplay. 

The launch 
This 30-crore mammoth project saw an unconventional launch in the sense that there was no coconut breaking ritual or sounding the clapperboard ceremony. Instead, the lead men - the Big B, Sanju and Akshaye - unveiled their giant-sized pictures and thereafter, clicked the remote for the screening of the one-minute promo. The event was held on Thursday, February 27 2003 at Taj Lands End, Bandra.

Aishwarya plays Sahiban, a Rajput daughter, and Abhishek Bachchan plays Karan, an army officer in the film. Abhishek Bachchan is in love with Sonali Bendre. The movie has been inspired by Keanu Reeves starrer Walk in the Clouds. But in a Hindi film, the heroine cannot get pregnant, neither does Aishwarya. Aishwarya, to avoid an arranged marriage lies that she is already married. All hell breaks loose in the joint family set-up. The whole family wants to know who the boy is. Abhishek Bachchan is mistaken to be the damaad.

When CID officer Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is drafted in to solve the mysterious robberies he doesn’t really know who or what he’s up against. 

The tale begins in Bombay where a sophisticated gang of robbers is giving nightmares to the Police department. Their modus operandi is modeled on a twister. They come like the wind, sweep the place clean and disappear even before the word ‘Chor / Thief’ escapes the location. The high point of these robberies is always the getaway of the robbers on their zouped up bikes – the slickest, swiftest, meanest, riding machines on the roads. 

Soon Jai is on the trail of the robbers – a gang headed by Kabir (John Abraham) – an evil perfectionist with an attitude. By the shroud of night Kabir and his gang are robbers but by day they transform into inconspicuous pizza delivery boys who work at Pizza Hut. 

Jai in his hunt for the robbers bumps into Ali (Uday Chopra), and at first suspects him to be the “thief”. Instead it turns out that Ali is only a ‘tapori’ garage mechanic who has one agenda in life: to become a ‘familywala’ ASAP in life (which calls for the miracle of at least one girl falling in love with him). Besotted by Jai’s wife, Ali has found his way to the cop’s home. Jai hates him at first but soon realizes that the clown can ride bikes like the wind and decides to team up with him to chase the robbers. 

Ali the reluctant recruit and Jai stakeout the thieves and set up an ambush. But, Kabir soon catches on to Jai-Ali’s teaming up and his arrogance pushes him to take the bull by the horn. He challenges Jai to catch him or leave the job. Jai, the proud officer that he is, takes on the challenge starting a maddening game between the good, the bad and the naughty. 

With an ingeniously devised scheme, Kabir not only manages to split Jai and Ali but also takes away the biggest loot of all time from the city. He lures Ali into his gang and they shift their base from the mean streets of Bombay to the sun kissed beaches of Goa. Jai consequentially resigns from his job. Left alone, without a job and purpose in life, Jai lands up in Goa with his wife for a much-needed vacation. 

Is Jai’s arrival in Goa just a coincidence or is it a part of a larger plan? How will Jai manage to catch Kabir and his gang without the help of either the police or Ali who is now working for them? What happens to Ali’s dream of finding a girl of his dreams and settle down in life? A stylish modern take on the ever-promising theme of Cops and Robbers, Dhoom! has fun, frolic, adventure, thrill and madness all thrown in- like your favorite ride in an amusement park… the only thing you want to do is to go back and take that ride all over again!

The film introduces Karan Sharma and a British actor Annabelle Wallis. The pair exudes freshness and charm that is integral to the script. Shankar Ehsaan Loy have composed the music, Binod Pradhan and Gopal Shah are the directors of photography, and Javed Akhtar has penned the lyrics.

'Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya' is inspired by Yash Chopra's 'Doosra Aadmi'. 'Doosra Aadmi' starred Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Raakhee, Neetu Singh and Parikshit Sahni. And in 'Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya' too, the story revolves around five important characters.

Vinay and Pooja Batra are in love with each other and subsequently get married. Vinay starts a modelling agency and for a product, wants to opt for the same model who had made a place for herself in the ad world sometime back - Tabu. But there is a problem here. Only Jackie Shroff knows the whereabouts of Tabu. When Vinay approaches Jackie for her address, Jackie refuses to divulge details, adding that Vinay ought to stay away from her since she is an eccentric woman. But Vinay is firm on assigning this task to Tabu alone and somehow convinces Jackie for her address. When Vinay approaches her with the offer, Tabu accepts it instantly because she sees her past in Vinay - Govinda - who is already dead.

Dil Pardesi Ho Gayaa

Dil Pardesi Ho Gayaa comes in as another movie based on India-Pakistan relations, though this one is more of a love story.

With the 'Indo-Pak' theme and 'love story', the first thing that strikes your mind is Gadar. But Writer-producer-director Sawan Kumar Tak (Souten, Hawas, Saajan Bina Suhagan, Mother 98) makes it clear that he hasn't derived any inspiration from the blockbuster.

The title DIL PE MAT LE YAAR summarizes the attitude of the film. Life is unpredictable. Anything can go wrong in our scheme of things. Your wife can leave you, you can go bankrupt, and you can feel like committing suicide because of incidents in your life.

The cast of the film has Manoj Bajpai as the main protagonist and his romantic interest is played by Tabu. Shukla plays Manoj's friend. The character played by Manoj is Ram Saran and he is a migrant. He plays a garage mechanic here. Basically it's a fun film. It is a film about desperate people. 'Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar' is a film about the choices we make in times of desperation. The film does not say that things are sad or grim. It just presents the way things are. It has a lot of fun and entertainment.

Curiosity ran high the minute Farhan Akhtar's DON was announced. Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, DON has an ensemble star cast - Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Isha Kopikkar, Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani.

That it is a remake of the classic Amitabh Bachchan starrer DON (1978) is a well-known fact. Apparently Farhan's DON is very different in terms of the look, mood and flavour though the essence is the same. Kareena will be seen gyrating to 'Yeh mera dil' (originally done by Helen) and the song 'Khaike Paan Banaras Wala' is definitely something to look out for, since Saroj Khan has remade it in a different style. The story goes like this...

A huge Indian contingent embarks on a dangerous cat-and-mouse trail of capturing DON (Shah Rukh Khan) - the ruthless drug mafia in Malaysia.

When DON gets seriously injured in a police encounter, the word that he is dead begins to do the rounds. The reality, of course, is that DON is held captive in a secret location, while his bumpkin of a look-alike, Vijay, is polished and sent to take down DON's gang.

In a bizarre twist of fate, when the man shielding the humble and streetwise Vijay, is killed, the latter comes to terms with the horrifying realization that both the police and the gang are out to nab him for different reasons.

In a desperate attempt to prove his innocence, he is aided by the glamorously staggering Roma (Priyanka Chopra), and handsomely striking, Jasjit (Arjun Rampal), who owes Vijay a favor for care-taking his son during his imprisonment. But will Vijay be successful in his mission?

Based on the successful erstwhile classic of the same name, which featured the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, the contemporary and stylishly crafted DON, features Bollywood czar Shah Rukh Khan playing a double role in one of the most defining performances of his career, teamed for the first time with former Miss World, Priyanka Chopra.

The biggest and most keenly awaited motion picture of 2006, DON is a high-octane, tension-filled, twisty roller coaster of a ride, with just the right dose of glamour, action, suspense and romance.

Just one question hurled across my mind after watching this high-velocity action thriller where the mighty Bachchan rescues a little girl from kidnappers in Bangkok - Why in the name of heaven and hell is the screenplay credited to Manoj Tyagi and Apoorva Lakhia when the film is almost entirely lifted from Tony Scott's Man On Fire?

That apart, EK AJNABEE is an above-average adaptation of a clever thriller with a central performance that tears through all cynical reading of celluloid apery.

The awesome Bachchan doesn't walk the talk. He strides through the lines as though to the baritone-born. He hardly speaks. But when he does… by jove! You still cling to the words that slice the stillness.

This is certainly not Bachchan's first strong-and-silent loner's role. What makes this one special is the interweavement of emotion and action. The narrative packs in a punch both ways.

Kajol expresses the delicate fragrance of a blind girl's romantic and sexual awakening in the historical hustle bustle of Delhi with a surefire sensitivity that energizes the plot and gives the narrative that certain edge of excitement that cinematic romance captures once in a while.

The romantic interludes are beautifully written. The shayari between Zooni and Rehaan flows out of the script to create an insouciant intimacy between the couple.

The narrative exudes a warm glow of glamour and substance. That silly self-conscious emptiness that had crept into recent romantic films is gone, as we are swept into a stylish yet substantial kingdom of courtship and damnation.

Gangu and Nihal together try to find jobs to support their diverse family, but all jobs they find have low wages and humiliation as a perk. Abdul who has always lived on easy money tries to convince them that there is an easy way of making money - a short-cut way to the good life. The four friends agree to try, just for once, Abdul's way of life. Even though they botch up their first job it pays them big money in no time. They start doing similar work and soon gain money, fame and confidence without having to take major risks. They soon wizen up and open an office, and name it - GANG.

Ganga Jal

A socio-political drama!

'Gangaa Jal- The Holy Weapon' has been partly shot at the far-off Wai village, 15 km away from the picturesque hill station of Panchgani in Satara district in western Maharashtra. Directed by Prakash Jha and lead pair of Ajay Devgan and Gracy Singh.  Along with Mohan Joshi and Yashpal Sharma (of the 'Lagaan' fame) are in the film.

'Garv - Pride & Honour' marks the directorial debut of Puneet Issar, the personality who is remembered for his strong portrayal of the character of Duryodhan in B.R.Chopra's epic tele-series 'Mahabharat'. Vishnu Prasad, a loser in life. Lacking self-confidence and the attitude to lead a life, things always go wrong with him. Having an unmatched knack of attracting problems, his life doesn't get any easier courtesy a nagging mother who takes pride in beating up Vishnu given a slightest opportunity!

His father, who is a henpecked husband, is petrified to raise a voice, let alone take his side. His friends show their concern by designating him as the undisputed king of idiots. Mohini, the love of his life doesn't even know his existence and her boyfriend wants to break his bones.

And as if all this was not enough ... God makes him invisible!

It’s a man’s experience in today’s India. An India, which according to director Akashdeep, is bleeding at its seams because her people have become complacent and blind to the corruption and disorder around them.

Manoj plays an idealist who refuses to be a silent spectator and rises in revolt, justifying the film’s title which means “waiting to kill”. With Tabu opposite Manoj one can expect an impressive display of histrionics. Raveena Tandon explodes on screen breifly in a UP-Bihar kind of number. She was Akash’s original choice for the lead but because of date problems she had to opt out reluctantly but hopes to leave her mark on Ghaath with her special item number.

Girlfriend

Tanya (Isha Koppikar) and Sapna (Amrita Arora) are two friends, together since college, living together and enjoying life. Both are into male bashing. Whatever Tanya does, Sapna follows.

Once when Tanya is out of town on official work, Sapna meets Rahul (Ashish Choudhary). Rahul pursues Sapna. By the time Tanya is back, Sapna is in love. When Tanya learns about this, she reacts strongly. Her jealousy and possessiveness comes out at meeting Rahul. By why is she so possessive about Sapna. Guru, a period flick, is the story of a simple but ambitious villager, Gurukant Desai. He dreams big and to fulfill his dreams arrives in Bombay (1958). He is married to Sujata (Aishwarya Rai). He also has something else; two shirts and Rs.15,000 to start his business, along with the Rs 25,000 he got as dowry! But soon he realizes that the business world is ruled by a handful of rich and influential people and for him to make his foray here, he has to “force” his way.

So he has to adorn the Good, the Bad & the Ugly. His fair side wins him admirers, at the same time as his grey side earns him a few opponents. Nanaji (Mithun) who runs a newspaper Swatantra and Shyam Saxena (Madhavan, the honest reporter) are two of them who stand up to fight Guru’s unjust ways.

The way the story unravels keeps the audience to their seat. Guru simply refuses to hear a “no’ and supposedly has an answer to every problem which sees his meteoric rise, until Mithunda (Nanaji) decides to expose him.

IF one missed the credit titles one could not blame a person for thinking that Joru Ka Ghulam was directed by David Dhawan. It is not. It's director is Shakeel Noorani who last made Bade Dilwala, a disaster. Govinda just needs to be told the outline of the scene he is more than capable of filling in the blanks, specially when it is old partner Kadar Khan playing opposite him. In this film the entire plot revolves around him and with his spontaneity and comic timing he is equal to the demand made of him. Unfortunately nothing of the sort can be said of his co-star Twinkle Khanna who still acts miserably and has a lousy screen presence.

Don't go by the title. Govinda is not playing Twinkle's slave. In fact his job is to make her and her three sisters agree to matrimony, none of whom are at all keen to get married much to the anguish of their father Kadar Khan who is willing to give Rs. five crore to each son-in-law.

Former Miss India -turned-Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia will soon surprise everyone when her forthcoming movie titled 'Julie' is released. Even from the initial stage, Neha Dhupia has been highlighted in the publicity of the movie, as the central character, playing a prostitute. Her three bold sequences in the film, which have been shot in montages, are part of songs. According to reports circulating in the industry, Neha would be seen topless in a scene, considered to be the boldest ever in the Bollywood history. The director Deepak Shivdasani reveals more. According to him, there are three scenes, particularly significant. In the first scene, Neha is shown in a bra and in the second she is topless. In the third, there is a long smooch between Neha and Sanjay Kapoor. 

Deepak Shivdasani says that 'Julie' is based on a TV talk show with Neha playing the role of `Julie`. She narrates how she traveled from Goa to Mumbai and became a prostitute on the way. The former wife of actor Kamal Hassan, Sarika, who has been a prominent actress herself, will play a TV anchor in 'Julie'. Other stars include TV girl Achint Kaur in the role of a reporter, besides Sanjay Kapoor, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Yash Tonk.

Bollywood finally manages a believable suspense thriller, which does not get reduced to a comedy at any time.
It has some excellent situational/background music, it is beautifully shot and has some exceptional lighting throughout the film. You would be forgiven for thinking that you were watching a Hollywood thriller at times. All credit to the screenplay, photographer and the director, of course. Performances from all the performers are good, despite this being a debut film for the lead lady, Lisa Ray. She has a dubbed voice because of her anglicised Hindi accent, but that has no impact, whatsoever on the film.

Lisa Ray is a lawyer who is assigned to fight the case of a young business tycoon Aftab Shivdasani. Aftab has been accused to murdering his wife. In the process of fighting his case, Ray falls in love with him and discovers some strange things too. Who is the killer? Something to watch out for in the film is a steamy song shot in blue tone which the censors are said to have passed uncut.

Go and see this one for a fresh look at Bollywood.

When Kamal Kishore Khosla (Anupam Kher) loses his precious plot of land in Delhi's rapidly degenerating concrete jungle, he gains a son who was about to leave for greener pastures (US).

Lucky Khosla! But we the viewers are even luckier. In Kamal Kishore Khosla's loss and gain there lurks a hugely rewarding morality tale for us.

If LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI goes Gandhian with a vengeance (no pun intended) KHOSLA KA GHOSLA tells us through delicious tongue-in-cheek satire that it's okay to use unfair means to get what's rightfully yours.

KHOSLA KA GHOSLA is a very rare precious tender and life-giving plant that needs careful nurturing for it to yield its optimum fruits. A film so simple and straightforward in its depiction of the working-class stress (done earlier to immense advantage in works as varied as Mahesh Bhatt's SAARANSH and Raj Kumar Santoshi's GHAATAK) you tend to miss the immeasurable amounts of unassuming talent that underline almost every scene of this remarkable film.

Jaideep Sahni's writing talent is put to exceptional use. The narrative captures the muddle and poignancy, irony and humour of Delhi's middleclass through a storytelling device where less is always more. A delectable understatement underlines almost every character's propulsion in this film about how to lose the plot to gain a much larger plot.

The real estate isn't the real asset of this robustly populated mellow-drama. It's the human values that one discovers in Khosla's journey from loss to redemption, that make this film several notches above your run-of-the-mill morality tale.

Debutant director Dibakar Banerjee fills the narrative with sharply cut incidents and episodes of an ordinary family caught in an extra-ordinary crisis. Apart from a few deliberately thrust thematic songs on the soundtrack; Banerjee economizes on the drama to focus on the characters and their quirks.

Khosla's dismayed realization that the dream-house into which he has invested his life's savings, is in the danger of being razed to the ground even before construction, brings to the surface the rather disturbing question of the fragmentation of the joint family.

Besides bringing father Kher and beta Dabas together this heart-warming film also brings other characters together in unlikely ways. The Muslim travel agent (Vinay Pathak) and the Khosla heir, who prepares to fly off to America, come together to plot the defeat of the real-estate shark (Boman Irani replicating to some extent his LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI act).

While the narrative preserves the blithe spirit to bring out the quirks and crises of the working-class there are numerous moments that bring a lump to your throat. Admirably the story of humanism and victory of the human spirit gets progressively dramatic without losing plausibility. Scenes where a drama group led by a wonderfully frazzled Navin Nishchol help Khosla regain his plot, are done in an endearingly dare devilish spirit.

After LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI this is the second film in a month to make us feel so positive about the pitfalls of urban existence. The credit must go above all to the writer and the actors for infusing an effortless candour into the working-class satire.

Every performer from Anupam and Boman to Parveen and Tara Sharma (watch her give spunk substance and sensitivity to the potentially trite girlfriend's role) blends into the film's mottled fabric. But for Anupam this film is a special triumph. He puts an extra amount of heart into Khosla's character making him more real than almost anything the actor has done lately.

On the journey to Khosla's happy ending we encounter characters who seem like our next-door neighbours… Khosla's Sardarji friend, the cunning tout who cheats Khosla, the actor who 'plays' Navin Nishchol's PA, the stage actress who smokes her way though the plot to hoodwink Boman… every character seems like someone you've met in that long and cumbersome journey of life which we all have to go through.

Thank God for stopovers like KHOSLA KA GHOSLA.

Time Magnetics (India) Pvt. Ltd. return with another masala actioner after last year's 'The Hero'.

This time it is the return of 'chota bhai' Bobby Deol to play the lead role in this Guddu Dhanoa directed flick (who delivered 'Jaal' with Sunny Deol and 'Hawa' with Tabu last year). And though Bobby Deol had a barren 2003, 2004 will see him in at least half a dozen films starting with 'Kismat - Vicious Trap of Fate'. Also Priyanka Chopra gets to play the sole heroine for the first time in this film (she shared screen with Preity Zinta in 'The Hero', Lara Dutta in 'Andaaz' and Sameera Reddy in 'Plan'). Combination of Anand Raj Anand and Dev Kohli handle the music department.

KISNA

A love story from 1947 India...

“Kisna” will be Subhash Ghai’s most creative piece of work. The film has been shot on a high budget and will continue Mukta Arts reputation as an innovative production house with a string of yesteryear hits like Karma, Ram Lakhan, Pardes and Taal. The screenplay has been a joint effort between Farrukh Dhondy, Sachin Bhowmick, Margaret Glover and Subhash Ghai. National award winners, cinematographer Ashok Mehta and art director Samir Chanda have worked on the movie. Tinu Verma has directed the action sequences and Saroj Khan who has an established rapport with Subhash Ghai does the choreography for this epic love story. 

Whilst the three-hour Hindi version of Kisna will hit Bollywood, Subhash Ghai will break into the international market with an English version. 

The film stars Vivek Oberoi, Isha Shravani and British actress Antonio Bernath in the lead roles along with British actors Michael Maloney, Caroline Langrishe and veteran actress Polly Adams. A talented team of Indian actors that include Hrishita Bhatt, Amrish Puri, Om Puri and Rajat Kapur supports the cast. 

The film is an epic tale for the twenty-first century that looks at the pre-independence era of 1930 and the breathtaking landscapes of a Himalayan region in which the rulers and the ruled have become sworn enemies. The film recreates the turmoil of the last days of the Raj through the heroic story of a young man of humble origins, Kisna (Vivek Oberoi), and his mission to protect his childhood friend, a beautiful British girl, Katherine (Antonia Bernath). She stands accused for the sins of her father, a ruthless British collector and is now hunted after Independence is granted and the aggrieved natives set out on a path of revenge. 

A journey across the many colours and cultures of North India develops as Kisna races to get Katherine to the British High Commission in New Delhi safely. Their friendship turns to love during the journey, which bring with it all sorts of complications, as Kisna’s marriage has been arranged to Laxmi (Isha Shravani). 

KISNA finally plays out an epic duel between Karma (deed) and Dharma (duty). We all have to wait and watch on the big screen in January to see the path Kisna finally follows. 

Ace cameraman Ashok Mehta has captured the spectacular settings and locations, from the Himalayan Mountains to the spiritual town of Haridwar with flair. The film has both veterans A.R. Rahman and Ismail Darbar composing music with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Subhash Ghai who is known for his rich sense of music seems to have drawn the best of both worlds from his music composers and will surpass all his previous musical love stories.

• A.R.Rehman has also recorded a special English song for the international version. 
• Antonia Bernath studied drama at Bristol's Old Vic Theatre School (founded by legendary actor Sir Laurence Olivier in 1946). She has done small roles on TV like "Holby City" and "The Afternoon Play".

Koi… Mil Gaya is the story about Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) who shows the world that friendship is truly universal.

Hrithik Roshan's mesmerizing performance as the mentally challenged man in KOI... MIL GAYA still continues to preoccupy the movie-lovers. Rakesh Roshan's sci-fi fantasy was a smash hit and also an indication that Bollywood can ring up to the possibility of making competent science-fiction movies.

The movie was a runaway hit with the little kids and with the grown-ups as well. And hence, Rakesh Roshan and his team decided to spawn a sequel to the film titled KRRISH. The theatrical trailer for the film is already out and is exhilarating, promising a good dose of action. The mellow Rohit of KOI...MIL GAYA has been replaced by a stronger and courageous super hero who is ready to save the world from the evil-clutches of a wicked genius.

The movie stars Hrithik Roshan, the gorgeous Priyanka Chopra (as his lady-love), the exemplary Rekha and the veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah in the principal roles.

Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana

Releasing in Oct 2006

After the outstanding success of its first release, Omkara, Eros International today announces the launch of its next music album, Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana, starring Bollywood diva Rekha, Mahima Choudhary, Vasundhara Das and Kim Sharma. Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamana is a women oriented comedy, which is anticipated to be a female centric version of Dil Chahta Hai.

The film is written and directed by Amar Butala and the music is by Iqbal Darbar, brother of Ismail Darbar. Playback singers include Udit Narayan, Sadhana Sargam, Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan, Vasundhara Das, Jaspinder Narula and Rekha.

Rekha has sung one of the songs, the classic ghazal Din Dhal Jaye, composed by S. D. Burman. It seems Rekha was humming the song on the sets when the director suggested that she should actually sing in the movie. She has managed to sing on very high notes.

Eros would also be distributing this film theatrically.

The film revolves around the relationships of four women -

Mayuri (Rekha) – Married four times but still looking for love
Anjali (Mahima Chaudhary) – Dates a new man every week but never falls in love
Natasha (Vasundhara Das) – Loves her baby, hunks and food, but not necessarily in that order
Kanika (Kim Sharma) - Loves her husband, but only when he does what he’s told
And, Amar (Ashmit Patel) – The prince charming, actually not very charming at all

Kyon Ki... (Review)

KYON KI… is special! 

• It teams Salman Khan and director Priyadarshan together for the first time.
• It also pairs Salman and Kareena for the first time.
• It is inspired by a classic Hollywood flick and it would really be interesting to see how the makers have Indianized the story.

Most importantly, it comes at a time when Salman's career is at all all-time high, with a number of hits under his belt, the recent one being NO ENTRY.

All these factors put together only enhance your expectations from the movie. Unfortunately, KYON KI… disappoints.

The problems with KYON KI… are manifold. If the story fails to involve you [it's outright predictable], even the grip, so vital in a love story that promises loads of drama, is clearly missing.

With three accomplished names [Salman, Kareena, Priyan] teaming up for the first time, you expect fireworks, but what you get in return is old wine packaged in a new bottle.

Priyadarshan has missed the bus this time!

Anand [Salman Khan] is in love with Maya [Rimmi Sen]. Maya too loves him, but is always out to play a prank on him. Anand and Maya are planning to marry, but Maya's prankish nature results in a freak accident in which Anand throws her in a swimming pool on their engagement day, not knowing that she can't swim. Maya dies…

A devastated Anand is convinced that it was he who killed Maya. Unable to overcome the shock, Anand loses his mental balance and is hospitalized.

Strict and old-fashioned Dr. Khurana [Om Puri] strongly believes that brutal force and oppression are the only way to tackle insane patients. Initially, even Dr. Tanvi [Kareena Kapoor], his daughter, feels the same, but she has a change of heart later.

Dr. Sunil [Jackie Shroff] develops a special bond for Anand. He also gets to know that Anand's family was instrumental in making him a doctor. Anand revolts against the strict hospital regime and rebels against the system. Dr. Tanvi takes up Anand's case and treats him with utmost compassion. Anand gets completely cured, but during the course of this treatment, Tanvi loses her heart to Anand.

But the father is against the match…

The screenplay of KYON KI… is a major stumbling block. The narrative is devoid of anything exciting. Perhaps, Priyan wanted to strike a fine balance between pleasing the elite and the aam junta, but neither does the drama have the stamina to strike a chord nor does the emotional quotient tug at your heartstrings. The formula may've worked in the 1970s and 1980s, but it's a complete misfit today.

The hospital sequences at the start of the film actually put you off completely. The way the nurses and hospital security thrash mentally challenged people black and blue is highly objectionable. How could such brutality on patients be depicted on screen in the first place?

Another glaring flaw is that the moment Salman regains his memory, he starts singing and dancing with the doc [Kareena] who treated and cured him. Hello, but wasn't the untimely death of his fiancée [Rimmi] a major setback for Salman which made him lose his mental balance? Can anyone overcome such a major crisis in a jiffy?

On the whole, KYON KI… lacks the power and punch generally associated with a Priyadarshan film. At the box-office, it's a complete letdown.

Diya Malhotra (played by Aishwarya Rai) is an idelaistic , sensitive girl whose childhood was spent in the coffee plantation town of coorg. Malhotra (played by Tinnu Anand) single-handedly brought up Diya, after his wife passed away. 

Malhotra has a dear friend Raj Chauhan (Uncle played by Amitabh Bachchan), a confirmed bachelor who has dedicated his life to a small orphanage he has in his home. Diya has been involved with the work there and is commited to social work. For her Masters in Social Work exam she comes to Mumbai. 

In unusual circumstances, she meets Arjun Khanna (played by Vivek Oberoi). Arjun is a seemingly free spirited, fun loving, adventurous guy. Once she arrives in Mumbai they realise that they will be staying in the same house sine Arjuns's parents (played by Om Puri and Rati Agnihotri) are Malhotra's friends. 

The friendship between Diya and Arjun and consequently their opposing views on love and marriage are at the heart of the film. 

It is a simple story about love and life.

Lakeer

“Lakeer – The Forbidden Lines” is prolific choreographer Ahmed Khan's debut attempt at direction.

Contrary to what one might have presumed, the director does not go for a love-or-dance theme (with a cast that mainly comprises of non-dancers). His multistarrer film is basically a story of relationships. 

Arjun Rana (Sunny Deol) is a powerful personality, feared by all. The apple of his eye is his brother Karan (Sohail Khan), who uses his brother's rich and famous image to the maximum advantage and always procures what he desires.

On the other hand, Sanju (Suniel Shetty) is a motor mechanic, loved by all. He idolizes Arjun Rana and wants to become like him. His love for his brother Saahil (John Abraham) is absolutely unshakable. Saahil represents the youth of the college and is in love with Bindiya (Nauheed Cyrusi). And, Bindiya happens to be Arjun Rana's sister. 

The movie deals with how circumstances change when relationships cross the forbidden lines.

The film is produced by Vivek Kumar under the banner of Vicky Films Pvt. Ltd. and has music by A.R.Rehman who composes for a Hindi film after a hiatus (if you prefer to overlook his Tehzeeb).

Lakshya (A few extras)

Lakshya - New film by Farhan Akhtar (Out 18 June 2004)

It took him 24 years and 18000 feet to find himself. 

A few important bits of news about the new film from Farhan Akhtar, the director of Dil Chahta Hai.

• The movie was shot in a period of 146 days.
• The shoot on the locales of Ladakh were canned at minus 8-9 degrees while the shoot in Delhi was done at 45 degrees. The camera crane was put up at 17,800 foot above the sea level.
• Chartered flights were booked to transport the heavy equipment to the locations in Ladakh. Internally, the equipment was transported using donkeys and trucks.
• While Dil Chahta Hai was largely autobiographical, Lakshya too draws from Farhan's life. Hrithik's character in the movie starts off as a young boy who is very confused and is struggling to figure out what he wants to do in life. Farhan went through the same in his own life.
• Farhan Akhtar had earlier approached Arjun Rampal to essay Hrithik's role in the film. Arjun could not allot dates to him since they were already booked for Rajiv Rai's Asambhav.
• Costume designer Arjun Bhasin has taken street styles and put it on the screen. Hrithik starts as a college student in Delhi, so he has been given a dressed down look wearing late 60s vintage Levis jeans (worn and weathered) with cowboy influences like big belt buckles and cowboy press button shirts. Preity Zinta has been given knee-length kurtas with jeans and sneakers.
• Farhan Akhtar has again created another 'hair story' with Lakshya. His fascination for the hairstyle stems from the fact that he wanted a difference between the actors playing their role as opposed to the actor playing their image. In the movie, Preity changes two hairstyles and Hrithik three.
• Farhan Akhtar had a collapse while shooting in Ladakh. The unit doctor has informed the crew that their bodies would react to the high altitude by the loss of appetite and they would have to force-feed themselves. And since Farhan being the non-cautious kind did not eat properly, it lead to weakness resulting in the subsequent collapse.

Love At Times Square

Dev Anand with 'Love at Times Square' intends to share his experience at New York's Times Square.

Though none of his films have made to the top, actor -director and also the heartthrob of millions in India and abroad, Dev Anand commands a magical lure and popularity that would make many stars turn green with envy. 

Few stars of the entertainment industry anywhere in the world would have the untiring drive and zest like him. Even at the age of 78, Dev Anand shows no sign of slowing down. The recent failure of 'Censor' has not dampened his spirits and he's already moved on to his next project 'Love At The Times Square'. 

Dealing with a cliché theme, the film is a story of a boy meeting a girl at New York's s Time Square on the New Year's Eve. The story winds up one year later at the Times Square. It is his experience at the Times Square which he intends to share with others through 'Love at Time Square'.  And bringing those precious moments to life is the young star-cast including Henee Kaushik (a Dev Anand discovery who made her debut in 'Censor') Shoaib Khan and Chaitanya, the two young men who fight for her attention. 

Khan plays Raj, a wealthy young Silicon Valley businessman, and Chaitanya plays a nice, middle class Indian boy. Produced by his Navketan International Films company, Anand appears in the film as well, playing a 'Silicon Valley billionaire.' 

The music of the film was launched by Information and Broadcasting minister Sushma Swaraj at a glittering function held in New Delhi. After 'Love at Times Square' it is 'Raj Mahal Mein Hatyakand', a film based on the massacre of Nepal's royal family earlier this year that the actor is planning to work on.

But first lets see whether his love triangle proves to be a landmark at the box-office when the film releases on January 26. What so ever may be the result, success has never been a destination for him, instead it is a never-ending journey.

Making a whodunit is a Herculean task indeed. Besides a taut script that ought to keep the interest of the viewer alive till the finale, the execution of the script should be exhilarating as well.

Having picked up numerous MTV, Channel V, Zee and Rapa awards for their videos, they felt the need to give new direction to their creative instincts. Lucky is their first full-length commercial feature and with story, screenplay and direction by this talented duo it promises to be an emotional, musical and visual extravaganza. 

Lucky is a tale of love that brings together two people who would never have met and fate not intervened. Lucky (Sneha Ullal) is the quintessential dreamer but she lives in turbulent times. On her way to school one day she is caught up amidst a sudden and unexpected wave of insurgency and in her attempt to escape the rebels she is thrown into contact with fellow countryman Aditya Sekhri (Salman Khan). So begins a journey, fraught with danger, by two people with nothing in common except the desire to get home safely. As they travel through everything from ambushes to icy wilderness, they discover both the limits of their endurance and that love works in.

Indraneel Thakur, or Neel (Ajay Devgan) is a grown-up man with the brain of a seven year-old. Life, for him, is a fable and the world a fairy-tale setting where no wrong or no evil can ever penetrate. 

The nucleus of his world is his seven-year-old daughter, Gungun, (Baby Rucha Vaidya) whom he loves beyond explanation. Friends, the owner of the books & coffee shop he works in and his landlady form the rest of his world. 

Gungun's mother, Maya Trivedi (Esha Deol) had entered Neel's life like a mysterious breeze but left after giving birth to the child. So for seven years, Neel and Gungun just had each other for comfort. Their world was a happy one but not perfect.

As Neel's world shatters around him, his decision to search for the best lawyer in town, lands him at the office of Neeti Khanna (Sushmita Sen). At first terribly resistant to take up Neel's case, she finally is broken down by Neel's sincerity and his unflinching love for his little daughter. 

To her great surprise, Neeti finds herself learning many lessons from Neel, and decides to take up his case. 

She soon realises that fighting a powerful businessman like Dayanath isn't the only hurdle. A handicapped man responsible for raising a child isn't going to go down well with the jury. 

Will Neeti be able to win Neel's case? And what about Maya? Will she help Neel when she hears about her father's quest?

Eros International launches Jimmy Shergil’s next Punjabi release - Mannat

Eros International announced the launch of B.A.G. Films production, Mannat, which is releasing in cinemas this October. Mannat is an emotional love story starring Punjabi film circuit’s one of the most popular star, Jimmy Shergil, in the lead role with Kulraj Randhawa, from television soap ‘Kareena Kareena’. The film is directed by Gurbir Singh Grewal.

Mannat is a family film, which is all about love & passion on one hand and hatred & betrayal on the other. Motivated from a true incident, which the director came across in 1996, the film brings out various facets of human behaviour in true Punjabi flavour and spirit.

During the year of turmoil in Punjab, an Army officer falls in love with a local village girl. Their Romance leads into a marriage in dramatic circumstances. However due to unfortunate incidents the girl dies after giving birth to a baby girl. Another woman who is desperate to become a mother steals the child. From here the misery of the Army officer starts. Twist in the story sends him to a life imprisonment.

Other stars include Punjabi film regulars like Kanwaljit Singh & Deep Dhillon.

Talking about Mannat, the producer, Anurradha Prasad, said, "In Mannat, we have made a conscious effort to promote talent from Punjab. The entire cast and crew is from Punjab besides the technical support and shooting locations, thus the movie will truly reflect the Punjabi spirit. "

"My Punjabi background has s inspired me to be a part of Punjabi cinema, and I am fortunate enough to get this opportunity.”, said Kulraj Randhawa. She adds, "I guess Mannat has a strong storyline and people who believe in watching meaningful cinema will definitely enjoy the movie."

The music is by Jaidev Kumar. With a Sufi touch and a mix of contemporary & Punjabi folk, the music has received rave reviews.

Market

The story of “Market” is a tragic journey of Muskan Bano's (Manisha Koirala) life.A journey which is full of pain and tears. She hails from an extremely poor family of Hyderabad. At the age of 15, due to poverty, she was married off to a middle-aged Sheikh of Dubai. The Sheikh used her for his pleasure for 7 days and then divorced her.

On a complaint lodged with the Police against the Sheikh by Muskan's (Manisha Koirala) father Barket Ali (Vallabh Vyas), the Sheikh is arrested. But he bribes the judge through the lawyer and gets released on bail. Barkat Ali commits suicide as he holds himself responsible for the destruction of Muskan's life. After his death, life becomes more miserable for Muskan. Circumstances forces her into prostitution and she finds herself in the brothel of Mehndi Bazar, a famous red-light area of Hyderabad.

The Sheikh is tried for raping Muskan. Muskan keeps fighting for justice by selling her body. It takes the court eight years to reach the final hearing. And in the end Muskan looses. The Sheikh is acquitted.

Story takes a turn. Muskan comes to Mumbai. Here through a corrupt Police Officer (Sayaji Shinde), she meets Juicy, a high-class pimp. Juicy introduces her to Lisa (Suman Ranganathan) and Isha (Shweta Menon) who are high-class call girls.

Lisa and Isha groom Muskan for high-class flesh-trade business. And thus Muskan of Hyderabad's Mehndi Bazar is rechristened as Malika in Mumbai Market.

Babu Pandey (Aryan Vaid), a hard-core criminal, meets Malika as a customer and loses his heart to her. However, she doesn't reciprocate.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Malika along with Lisa and Juicy go to Dubai for a dance show. In Dubai, she bumps into Sheikh and it is here that she finds an aim in her life and decides to avenge the destruction of her life and the death of her father. Meanwhile, the Sheikh hires Yashwant Anna (Govind Namdeo) to kill Malika.

Would Malika succeed in taking revenge on the Sheikh? Or will she be killed by Anna's men? What role Malika's lover Babu Pandey will play in this battle of blood?

The climax of Market will answer all these questions.

He meets Preity Zinta, a Kashmiri Hindu girl and falls in love with her.

Munnabhai MBBS

Munnabhai (Sanjay Dutt) is a happy man. He lives with his gang in the bylanes of a 'dhobi ghat' in Mumbai; takes pride in being a 'social worker' (they actually settle 'financial disputes' through 'dadagiri'); and enjoys his booze, babes, brawls followed by a good night's sleep. Not much bothers Munna.

Except his parents' annual visit from the village. Munna's father, Hari Prasad Sharma (Sunil Dutt), an upright, moralistic man believes that his son is actually a doctor running a charity hospital. Every year, when his parents arrive, Munna and his gang bathe, shave, don white coats and stethoscopes and pretend to be diligent doctors.

This year, however, the clever charade falls apart. Hari Prasad Sharma runs into an old friend, Dr. Asthana (Boman Irani), who has a daughter called Suman (Gracy Singh). The two decide that their children, both doctors, would make a perfect match. Munna tries hard to save the situation, but his father discovers the truth. And all hell breaks loose.

Hari Prasad Sharma, now broken by the truth, removes his white spotless 'pagadi' and cries. Munnabhai then takes a decision that would change many lives : He decides to become a doctor.

Munnabhai MBBS is a hilarious and heart warming story of a local goon's journey into the medical world - a place he neither belongs to nor believes in. It is a classic story of a right man in a wrong place.

Sameer [Aftab Shivdasani] is a successful Fashion Designer based in Mumbai. He has three close friends, Sharad [Praveen Dabash] , Satin [Vrijesh Hirjee] and Shika [Anjala Zaveri]. All three work with him. 

Janvi [Neha] is a daughter of a rich business man who loves Sameer. While sameer takes her as her best friend. 

Sameer becomes phone friends with a girl named Muskaan [Gracy Singh] who lives in Delhi. They don't even know each others name and begins to fall in love with each other. 

They make a promise to meet each other after 15 days which is 1st January New Year in Delhi. This will be the day when they will express their love towards each other. Somehow during this 15 days they meet in Shimla without knowing about each other. Ironically some incidents make them arch enemies. This enemity turns into friendship and they feel attracted towards each other. Now the trauma…. they both feel that they are cheating their commitment which they had made on phone. As their trauma is reaching to a peak, something happens which shatters everything. Janvi, who had come to meet Sameer is killed. 

Inspector Vikram Singh Rajput [Gulshan Grover] is convinced that Sameer is the killer. Sharad, Satin and Shika are the other suspects. Muskan does not know what to believe. Sameer has to prove himself innocent but how?

The film travels across India exploring the mysteries and fascinations of this vast nation whose population comprises one-sixth of the world.

Naach

Another twist on the theme of infidelity...

It is made by Ram Gopal Verma and K Sera Sera production. The movie revolves around Abhi (Abhishek Bachchan), a wannabe film actor, and Rewa (Antara Mali), a struggling choreographer. Abhi does not mind selling his soul to make it big, Rewa wants to stick to her principles. Naach, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Antara Mali is being billed as a triangle. No, the film does not have a second hero or a second heroine. The makers are calling the film a love triangle between Abhi, Rewa and their values. 

Naach is about two young people struggling for name and fame in the maniacal frenzy of Hindi filmdom. The movie has been in the news in Bollywood circles for the hot smooch between Chhota B and Antara, but there is more to the film than that. 

In Naach, Abhishek plays a newspaper editor who moves into a new apartment along with his wife. Coincidentally, the secretary in Abhishek's office turns out to be his neighbour in the building. She is married too. 

Things begin to get complicated when Abhishek and his secretary start developing feelings for each other. With their respective spouses often away, the two begin to indulge in acts of infidelity. But the real bolt out of the blue comes when the two learn that their spouses are also having a relation in secret.

Nayee Padosan

A family entertainer!

Well-known choreographer B.H. Tharun Kumar makes his bow as a director with producer Nitin Manmohan's NAYEE PADOSAN, starring Rahul Bhat, Vikas Kalantri, Anuj Sawhney, Aslam Khan and Mahek Chahal.

Based in a suburban locality, the film encompasses entertainment for the entire family, containing loads of non-stop humour and incorporates the right doses of emotions and action at the right places.

The story revolves around the protagonist or the 'Nayee Padosan' [Mahek Chahal] who has shifted into a new locality. Her simplicity, righteousness and no-nonsense attitude are qualities any man would want his life partner to possess.

Three different boys – Raju [Anuj Sawhney], Raja [Aslam Khan] and Ram [Vikas Kalantri] – from different backgrounds, characteristics and eventually modus operandi are swept head over heals in love with the girl.

What follows next is a laugh riot, in the way the three eligible bachelors try and get themselves acquainted and eventually outwit one another to get the girl.

The film takes a sudden turn when a new entry – Prabhu [Rahul Bhat] – that happens to be a favourite with both the girl and her family shatters the hopes of the three eligible bachelors. Nothing seems to stop the inevitable. The battle seems lost for the three hapless boys.

The film goes through various emotional graphs where the three boys have their individual shares of gains and losses vis-a-vis their competitors. The girl doesn't reveal her feelings until a certain change of events makes her realise whom she really loves and would want to spend the rest of her life with.

The film - if one may call it that - is one long fiesta of flirtatious encounters between the arranged-marriage victim Neal and a bevy of women he encounters. For company on his raunchy romp Neal has the whiny, sodden and thoroughly unlikable Nikki (Tanisha Mukherjee). Most of the time audiences are in the dark about her motivations… not surprising since she's either drunk or incoherent…or both.

Omkara

Omkara is based on William Shakespeare’s 17th century classic ,”Othello”. Regarded as one of the Bard’s finest plays about the human condition, it is being brought to life in an Indian milieu for the first time in a mainstream Hindi film, by noted writer director Vishal Bhardwaj. This is his successive Shakespeare effort after the highly celebrated “Maqbool”which brought the brooding Macbeth to Indian screens a couple of years ago.

Set against the milieu of political warfare in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh, Omkara follows one man’s descent into sexual jealousy and the final wreckage of his love at the altar of blind obsession. Love is blind but jealousy is even blinder and can tear apart even the strongest and bravest of warriors..

Omkara or Omi is a gifted chieftain who heads a gang of outlaws, which include the crafty Langda Tyagi and the dynamic Kesu amongst his chief cohorts. The story begins when Omi appoints Kesu and not Langda as his chief lieutenant. Langda’s pride is slighted and raging with envy, he hatches a plot to falsely implicate Omi’s beautiful fiancé Dolly, in an illicit affair with Omi’s “favourite lieutenant”, Kesu. Using petty insinuations and lies, Langda keeps poisoning Omi’s mind till one day he snaps and goes amok tearing up his secure world, leading up to a horrific tragedy at the end of which Omi realizes the backlash of his actions but is it too late…?
      
In the original play, Othello’s “tragic flaw” is his jealousy, his inability to take things at face value, a quality that Iago provokes to the hilt. Omkara, in spirit, stays true to that central theme and weaves all other conflicts around it. Having said that, Vishal has made the story his own and ends up humanizing Shakespeare’s characters with the necessary folklore and ethnic charm that is unique to an Indian setting.

All in all, a gripping modern day adaptation that makes this one of those rare instances of Shakespearean cinema that anyone can tune into and enjoy.

One Dollar Curry

One Dollar Curry is the new Indo-Franco-British film written and directed by acclaimed author and director Vijay Singh. The ingredients for this eagerly awaited crossover film include Vikram Chatwal, Gabriella Wright, Smriti Mishra and Trevor Stephens. 

The film is the story of Nishan (Vikram Chatwal), a street-smart Indian who reaches Paris in search of political refuge. He produces a kitchen on wheels called "One Dollar Curry" to survive. Ironically, Nishan knows nothing about cooking, but knows plenty about serving up fun and laughter with the help of his new friends. In the midst of trying to get by, Nishan is trapped between two gorgeous women, one his Indian fiancé (Smriti Mishra) and the other, his French lover (Gabriella Wright). Nishan uses his imagination and sense of humour to win the battle of life. 

The creator Vijay Singh is a well-known Indian writer - filmmaker living in Paris. His last feature Jaya Ganga, released here in 2000, received stupendous press response in the UK and France. Jaya Ganga ran in Paris cinemas for a record 49 weeks. One Dollar Curry is his second feature film.

Vikram Chatwal, the chilli powder in One Dollar Curry, is a New York-based actor and a leading hotelier. When Vijay Singh saw talent, chutney, chaat, masala, all beaten into one good-looking young man surrounded by beautiful women, he became a natural choice to play Nishan, the male lead in One Dollar Curry. Vikram has finished shooting for two films since One Dollar Curry - Hope and a Little Sugar by Tanuja Chandra and Ek Ajnabee by Apoorva Lakhia with Amitabh Bachchan. 

Gabriella Wright, the garam masala in the 'dish', is the daughter of the famous sculptor Paul David Wright who designed sets for Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones. The gorgeous actress who is new to the world of cinema describes herself as "a perfect mixed vegetable curry" being ¼ English, ¼ Irish, ¼ Portuguese and a ¼ Mauritian. Gabriella plays the role of Nathalie, the female lead in the film. Following One Dollar Curry, Gabriella has played in Abel Ferrera’s latest film, Mary. 

Smriti Mishra, the cumin powder to add to the flavours of this artistic creation, is a well-known Indian actress. She was discovered by Vijay Singh as the female lead of his previous film Jaya Ganga. As a result of her sensitive performance in Jaya Ganga, she was praised by the entire world press. After Jaya Ganga, Smriti has completed about ten other films in both India and abroad. Smriti plays Yamini in One Dollar Curry, Nishan's Indian fiancée. 

Trevor Stephens, the taste of tamarind in Vijay Singh's curry, is the son of a Panamanian father and a Jamaican-Cuban mother. Trevor made his debut in cinema with Gerard Oury's The Brain. His films include Street of No Return and Run Away Baby besides twenty other international films. Trevor plays 'Fixer,' Nishan's partner in this ‘garam masala’ comedy. 

A truly global film, Vijay Singh has brought in talent from the world over for the completion of One Dollar Curry, including musical maestro Zakir Hussain, who composed the music score for the film. A classical tabla player of the highest score, Zakir has accompanied artists such as George Harrison, Ravi Shankar and John McLaughlin. 

One Dollar Curry successfully ran in Paris for over 11 weeks and was shown to house-full theatres in India for several weeks. It has received enthusiastic response from critics both in France and India. One such review from a critic in Paris describes the film perfectly: "This charming tale portrays, with tenderness and humour, the immigrant Indian community in Paris. It is funny, unusual, full of colour, joy and music."
